7 Childish Things I Still Do

I am a fully gown adult now (almost).

I rent a flat, I pay council tax, I pay bills, I work Monday to Friday 9-5.30, I’m in a long term relationship, I plan my own holidays, I keep two ferrets alive, I cook meals, I keep up with politics, I do my laundry, I pay my own phone bill…

I’m not saying you have to do each of these things to be classed as an adult or that this is an exhaustive list, but surely I get adult points for some of them.

That being said there are still plenty of times in my life that I feel like I am still a lost child at a theme park. Yeah, that happened to me one time.

Here are 7 childish things I still do…

1. Get scared speaking on the phone

I worked in customer service for a year where I took about 60/70 calls a day yet I still get heart palpations whenever I have to call anyone. Things like Uber and Just Eat are a absolute life saver, minimum human interaction but maximum satisfaction.

2. Slam doors

Okay so this one is really bad. I know I shouldn’t do it, it’s awful, but sometimes when I am really angry I slam my door like Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday. Every time I do it I can hear my dad’s voice shouting ‘don’t you slam MY doors’ and I feel incredibly guilty.

3. Get scared of the under the bed monster

No matter how much I convince myself that ghosts doing exist in the broad delight, come nighttime all my childhood fears creep back into my brain. No way in hell is any part of me dangling over the side of the bed.

4. Finish all the main so I can have dessert

Well this is one thing I wish would not have stuck. The parents enforced into us that we have to eat all of the main before we can move onto dessert. I am still in the midst of unlearning these rules and training myself that just because it’s on my plate it doesn’t mean I have to finish it!

5. Eat so many sweets that I feel sick

I think the only difference between me being a child and me being an adult is that I can now afford to buy lots more sweets.

6. Hope an adult will fix things

I know this one has been used on so many lists, but I still will look around for an adult when things are going wrong. Then comes the crippling realisation that I am the adult and it’s all on me to fix things.

7. Follow cats around

When I was a little girl and someone took me out my mum had to tell them ‘watch out for her, she will stop to stroke cats’. I would be walking side by side with my mum then see a cat and wander off without saying a word, it led to many moments of panic for my poor mother. Yeah I still do that, I even ended up queueing up to stroke a cat a few months ago…

So those are a few childish things I still do. My boyfriend will tell you there’s many more but he’s just being silly of course, hem.

I think the older you get the more you realise that being an adult doesn’t exist, not the kind of adult you imagined as a child anyway. They all seemed to have it so together and they knew the answers to everything, well that was all lies wasn’t it! Anyways, who wants to grow up, let’s just Peter Pan our way through life.

What childish things do you still do?

Brunch in Vienna

Two of my favourite things in the world are food and travel.

So naturally whenever I go travelling anywhere I make sure I look up some good places to eat food beforehand.

However I completely forgot to before I got to Vienna, and I ended up doing a quick Google search on where to get breakfast one morning.

A place called Ulrich popped up, apparently known for its brunch menu. So off I headed…

The first thing I thought as I stood outside was damn this place is packed! When we talked to a waiter they immediately asked for our reservation. Clearly I had underestimated the popularity of this place.

Luckily for us there had been a no show so we were able to be seated straight away. Phew, because I was getting hangry!

They have a beautiful outside area but we were seated inside, however it was just as lovely in there too. Very cool, very hipster.

They have a very large breakfast and brunch menu, form yoghurt and granola, fruit salad and porridge to fritters, omelettes and bacon. Something for everyone, which is not always easy!

I went for an omelette, which is not my usual choice. I absolutely love omelettes but i like them how I cook them and I can be a bit fussy.

Luck was on my side this day and the omelette was delicious! I also got a hot chocolate which was just as good.

The staff were friendly and we talked a little with the guy who was serving us. Turns out he was from my home town, which is really random as I live in a tiny little town in the north of England. What are the chances!

So yeah, basically if you’re heading to Vienna and you love brunch then be are to make a stop at Ulrich. It would be probably best to book in advance but it will be worth it!

Have you been to Vienna before? What was your favourite place to eat there?

A Pick of Pixi Products

In the words of Kirk from Gilmore Girls, I wanna get the healthy glow of someone who consistently goes to the gym without having to go to the gym of course.

I started doing a little digging around for beauty brands that would give me this effortless glow, and Pixi came up a lot. Like, a lot a lot.

It also had a lot of great reviews behind it so I decided I would give it a go myself, to see if it was worth the hype and the price tag. Whenever I try a new brand I like to get a few of their products, so I will be writing about a couple of others too.

I picked all of these up just over a month ago now and have been using them fairly regularly ever since.

Let's start with the Pixi Glow Mist. The first thing I noticed with this is the smell, it smells like holiday in a bottle!

You put the glow mist on before and after applying make-up. It sort of works like a primer to keep your make up in place.

The spray is really refreshing, I carry it around in my handbag to spritz throughout the day.

When I put on my make up I like to use a lot of powder to keep my makeup in place. This can sometimes leave my face looking a little dry. A couple of sprays of this and my face looks more natural, without my make up washing off.

I have bought a couple of radiance moisturisers lately that were supposed to give a natural glow, instead I found there were practically just full of glitter which looked a bit ridiculous. This is way more natural looking.

The next item I chose was the Pixi Large Lash Mascara. I originally bought this for my evening look because I thought it would give me big dramatic lashes.

Turns out it doesn’t give you really thick, dramatic lashes but instead more of a subtle look.

I have been using this as my everyday mascara which it is absolutely perfect for. It gives your lashes just enough oomph without going overboard.

Finally I chose the Pixi Double Cleanse. I wanted to use this every evening (as it recommends) for a few weeks before writing about it. But this girl is lazy and it’s a struggle for me to remember to take my make up off each night, never mind adding two more steps to my night time ritual.

Instead I have been using this on and off, probably 1 or 2 times a week since I got it.

The first step is a solid cleansing oil, which is something I haven’t used in a really long time, probably not since I was still using whatever was on my mums skincare shelf.

It feels like this step gives my skin a deep clean and it is removing all of the crap that has probably accumulated throughout my day.

The second step is a cleansing cream. This one is more soothing but still feels like it’s giving a good cleanse. I heard on a podcast that you should leave your cleanser on for a little while, so I have been leaving the cream on for about 5 minutes before washing off.

I have actually just used this before writing the post so it’s fresh in my mind, my skin feels ridiculously soft, I can't stop stroking my face!

I do feel like there could be cheaper alternatives out there for the Glow Mist and the Double Cleanse. If i had been using the Double Cleanse everyday then I would have had to buy another pot already and I can't afford to keep buying it that regularly.

But maybe that’s just me being stingy, I love getting a a good bargain.

Saying that I do really like these products and I have recommended them to friends.

Have you used any of the Pixi range? Are there any products you’d recommend?

Air bnb: Private Room or Entire Home?

I think within the past few years I have used Air bnb for almost every trip away.

If you’ve booked through Air bnb before you’ll probably know that there a few room type options available. Entire home, private room and shared room.

I’m going to be talking about the two that I have frequently used: private room and entire home. Private rooms is where you have a room to yourself but share communal areas like the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Entire home is where you have the whole place entirely to yourself

I’ve actually stayed in quite a variety of private rooms. One was a bed and breakfast, one was more like a 2-bed hotel and a few of them have just been a spare room in someones house.

The bed and breakfast one was so charming and lovely. The hosts cooked us up a full english breakfast in the morning (with homemade blueberry scones!!) and they let us play with their dog. Pretty much perfection.

In Prague I stayed in a stunning 2 bed apartment in the new town. It was modernly decorated but also had lots of the original charm, the gorgeous dark wood floor was from the 18th Century! I had a large room with air conditioning, a smart TV and an absolutely huge bed, as well as my own bathroom.

There was only one other room next to mine, but the walls were so thick you couldn’t hear a peep the other guests staying there. I think I saw them once as I was leaving the flat.

So if you get a private room like the ones above, then you’re getting a pretty good deal!

However, I have also stayed in a few places where it is just a spare room in someones house. In one case it was a spare room in a student house.

I always found these ones to a little dingy and less clean than the others, which is really off putting. Especially the student flat, the bathroom was disgusting.

Obviously they’re not all like this. Just be sure to check the reviews before you book, especially for accuracy and cleanliness.

Private rooms have always felt to me a bit intrusive, I make sure I use the communal areas as little as possible and I am also hyper aware of any noise I am making.

When I go away I usually head out for drinks but I felt like I had to be super quiet on the way back into a shared room, like I was 14 years old trying to not wake up the parents when I was sneaking in past bed time.

When I have the entire place to myself I feel a lot more relaxed and at ease. I don’t have to worry about awkward encounters, making small talk or keeping the noise to an absolute minimum.

Not that I’m a particularly noisy person, I just get overly worried that I am when someone else is there.

Shared rooms are usually cheaper than private rooms, so if you are working with a tight budget then they’re a good choice. You can get some great shared rooms deals, like the bed and breakfast or the one in Prague

If you’re not working to a strict budget then I would definitely recommend getting the entire place to yourself.

I just feel really feel so much more relaxed and that’s so important to me for a holiday. I don’t spend a massive amount of time in the room, I am usually out and about for the most part, but I still found it made a big difference.

The Gingham Smock Dress

I am obsessed with smock dresses at the moment. They’re comfortable, stylish and flattering. What more do you need?

I am all about the comfort when it comes to clothes. Not only is it really uncomfortable to sit in skinny jeans all days, but it also makes me feel super body conscious and I go to a bad place. In other words I get sad or moody and eat ice cream when I’m home to cheer myself up. A bit counterproductive, I know.

There are so many more comfortable and stylish options out there. When I heard elasticated waist a few years ago I thought of clothes for older ladies. Mainly because one of my clients is an over 50s fashion retailer and they love a good elasticated waist.

Now I’m actively looking for elasticated waist items, it feels so much better when you can actually breather in your clothes.

Let’s talk about the Gingham trend. I bought something when the trend last came around, then I ended up hating it and never wearing it again. So I have been quite reluctant to buy something this time.

I am trying to buy more timeless pieces that won’t go in and out of trend.

However when I saw this dress on ASOS i instantly fell in love. It’s so perfect for summer days and most importantly, I could actually see myself wearing it time and time again.

Also, that £20 price tag! What a bargain!

I have already worn it like 5 times since buying it a few weeks ago, it has become a firm wardrobe favourite.

Fun fact, the first time I wore it was to a wedding because the boyfriend had forgotten to bring the dress I planned to wear and this was all I had. I felt quite uncomfortable at first but it got a lot of compliments (people are very nice when they’re drunk).

M&S Healthy(ish) Snacks

I’m not a food expert, a dietician, I have no qualifications or scientific knowledge on what is and isn’t healthy. All I know is, these snacks are probably better for you than eating a family size bar of Dairy Milk and they’re vegetarian and they’re delicious!

I constantly stand in shops, just hoping a healthy snack is going to jump into my hands. I have tried so many things, including seaweed crisps and kale crisps (bleugh). I used to buy some mini packs of meat - low carb, high protein - but then I turned veggie.

I know nuts are supposed to be a good choice, but I just don’t like them. I’m really jealous of people who keep little tupperware boxes of nuts in the bag to nibble on when they’re out and about. I WANT SOMETHING TRANSPORTABLE, I AM ALWAYS HUNGRY!

So obviously I was a little excited when I stumbled upon these in Marks and Spencers. Alas, healthy snacks that don’t taste like cardboard and are vegetarian!

Crispy Coated Chickpeas With Moroccan Style Spices

I already have a serious hummus addiction, that is supported by a mildly severe falafel addiction. So naturally roasting chickpeas was the next step.

Lightly Salted Habas Fritas

These are roasted broad beans that are lightly salted. They’re pretty much as close to nuts as you can get without actually tasting like nuts. It’s beans, so they’re healthy, right?

Jalapeno Giant Corn

Big old balls of spicy corn. Taste sort of like pop corn on the first bite, then the jalapeno flavouring kicks in to give it a more savoury taste

All of these are incredibly moreish, it takes a little willpower not to polish off a bag in one sitting. I’ve been buying them for a snack at work, either to nibble on throughout the day or as part of my lunch. One bag lasts Monday to Friday so at £1/£2 a pop they’re an bargain!

What healthy snack food do you eat?

Netflix Movies: August Round Up

“Didn’t you just do a Netflix post not so long ago?”

Yes, yes I did.

But as I  have said many times, Netflix is my life. So I got a lot to say on the topic! Last time the theme was British shows to binge watch, today’s post is a round up of some of the movies I have watched lately.

Some of them I’ve really liked, other ones not so much.

The Circle

The latest Netflix film with Emma Watson. I found the idea behind this film really interesting. It’s a bit social media gone mad, big brother, watch dog kinda thing. Are we sharing too much in the modern digital age?

The film follows Emma Watson as she starts a new job at a powerful social media company

The Circle has a brilliant cast and an interesting topic, but it fails to deliver a satisfying ending. I wanted to like it, but I think I was expecting it to end in a more dramatic and meaningful way.

The Lobster

I had heard this film was quite weird beforehand. Well it definitely lived up to that expectation and then some.

In this dystopian society you need to have a partner, if you don’t then you have 45 days to find one before you get transformed into an animal. At least it’s an animal of your choice.

The film is quirky, yet has some really deep and dark moments, sometimes really uncomfortable moments. It will leave you with a lot to think about.

Sleeping With The Enemy

If you’re looking for a thriller then this one will do the job just nicely.

Julia Roberts stars as a woman who is in an abusive and controlling relationship. Mini spoiler - she plans an escape and carries it out. But what will the husband do when he finds out?

In the spirit of being honest, I actually watched this on a coach when travelling around Europe. BUT i have just noticed it is now on Netflix and I really liked it so i wanted to put it on the list.

Melissa McCarthy is part of a spy duo with Jude Law. Melissa’s character has all of the spy smarts but lacks the confidence needed to be in the field, until her partner is murdered on the job.

She is called upon to fill his shoes, with a lot of help from her friend (Miranda Hart). I was laughing out loud throughout the film and it is definitely one I will be watching again on a Sunday afternoon.

Before I Fall

The story follows Samantha who wakes up on Cupids Day (must be some American thing?). The day revolves around her talking with her friends about losing her virginity. The students all end up at a guy called Kents party, who potentially has a crush on Samantha.

Drama breaks out at the party, and when Samantha wakes the next day it turns out it is Cupids Day all over again...

An American teen drama, this film is Groundhog Day meets 13 Reasons Why.

Two Night Stand

Well I’ve just given this film a quick Google, and it doesn’t have the best ratings.

However, I actually quite liked it. It’s a rom-com following two people who meet online to hook up, only to be snowed in the next day. I thought the characters were interesting and somewhat relatable.

It’s not one of those films that’s gonna make it into your top 10, but if you’re looking for an easy watching modern rom-com then I’d recommend giving it a go.

You Get Me

This is a high school thriller with a touch of romance…sort of. Basically a young couple break up one night, and on that break the guy, Tyler, sleeps with a girl named Holly.

The next day (or in a couple of days time maybe) he gets back together with his girlfriend Alison and decides to forget his little rendezvous with Holly, not telling Alison what happened.

Until Holly starts at their high school, whaaaat? Turns out she’s a bit of a psycho too. Again, this is not an amazing film but is perfect for easy watching.

I hope you found something to watch from this list. You may have noticed already, but I really like watching average films. I actually actively look for bad films to watch sometimes, they’re fun to mock and there’s less pressure when watching them.

What films have you watched on Netflix lately? Let me know in the comments below please, I’m always on the lookout for something new.

Happy Scoops || July 2017

So over the past few months I have been sporadically writing a happy scoops post - collecting some of the things/stories that have made me happy lately. I’ve previously talked about some heart warming moments I’ve witnessed and positivity on Twitter. Today I am going to talk about some things that have made me happy in my more immediate life.

Ragged Sham

My sister has just started her new blog and it looks a million times better than mine already. She is a graphic designer now and did art at A-level, so I’m not going to take it too hard.

She is super creative and gives out lots of good DIY tips that are easy enough for someone as inept as me to follow. She also loves to travel so expect to see a whole bunch of amazing travel posts, I cannot wait!

Weddings Galore

This summer I have been to not one, not two, but three whole weddings! Well, two whole weddings and one wedding reception. Although it has been stressful to find an outfit, I never learned and kept buying my dresses at the last minute, I have enjoyed every one.

The first wedding took place in a beautiful mansion, with someone playing disney songs on the piano. We took a tractor ride over to a freshly decorated barn and drank all of the gin from the gin palace they had provided. The last wedding was in a tipi in the middle of nowhere near Cambridge, with wooden benches and wildflowers everywhere. Both basically looked like Pinterest had thrown up everywhere and it was incredible!

My brother threw his fiancé a surprise 30th birthday meal, with the help of her sister. We were so close to arriving at the same time as the birthday girl, I was so tense! We managed to get inside the restaurant five minutes before she showed up, phew.

It was such a lovely day and a great chance to see so many people in one place. I live in a different city to all of my family so I love it when every one gets together for family events.

B-A-B-Y, baby

I went on a cinema date with a friend and we watched Baby Driver. I had not seen any trailers before I went, so I didn’t know what to expect. It was ah-mazing! The sound track is incredible, I have been repeatedly listening to the playlist on Spotify.

Thailand Travels

One of my friends has quit her job, packed up and flew off to Thailand to go travelling for the foreseeable future. She has done this solo, which has majorly impressed and motivated me. I am obsessively following her adventures through any social media channel possible, as well as badgering her for travelling tales.

A few of us are going to head out in November to see her and go on a mini adventure and I literally cannot wait, it’s got me through some tough days at work, let me tell ya. It will be my first time visit Asia which is something I’ve been dreaming of since I don’t know when. I also love going on a sunny holiday in the middle of Autumn, I love the cold season but it’’s good to get a little burst of sunshine.

It feels good to write down all of the things that have made me happy lately, I think I’ve been focusing too much on the stressful little moments lately. But really there has been a lot of positivity. What’s been making you happy lately?
